No Talent?... you be the judge.
"No Talent" by Now (oil on reclaimed chipboard)

Originally discarded as an unfruitful adventure into new territory where the artist's intent was never fully realised.

Frustrated with what was considered nothing more than a poor attempt at working with a new medium... the words "no talent", a genuine expression of contempt and self-condemnation were scrawled into the paint with a finger before the piece was flung aside in disgust.

A first-time experiment with oils by Brighton's cross-media creative Now. It was the inspirational catalyst that has become the symbol par excellence for No Talent?

This painting symbolises the beauty that results from a combination of innocence and the desire to create.

Most chemical/biological/nuclear reactions, the mechanisms that have supported evolution in the currently experienced reality, have been determined by chaos. Yet the aesthetic perfection of a sunset is enough for some to personify a creator and assert that a conscious hand must have guided this existence. If this can be taken as unverifiable... and if the beauty of a sunset can be taken as a human truism... then learning to work with innocence and diminishing the power of control systems could go a long way to appeasing the angst so evident in modern culture.

The artwork of children can be sold to the greatest galleries on earth as abstract masterpieces because it is creativity itself, in it's purest form, that is the most beautiful thing in nature. Whether it be represented by one artist's lifetime struggle, condensed into a masterpiece... or the perfect, innocent beauty of a newborn baby... it is the manifesting creative spirit that renders something beautiful... and it is the audience's ability to perceive that which has resulted in the adage "the eye of the beholder".

The beginner is just as capable of genius because the master must learn and then unlearn everything in order to regain the "beginners mind" famously sought by zen aspirants.

dep[art]ment

A group of artists employing a technique they refer to as "artjamming" but with their own unique twist.

E
ach contributor, working sequentially as opposed to simultaneously, develops the piece, free to enhance or obliterate previous layers at will.

The process continues ad infinitum until the contributors agree that the work is completed.

Separated from a singular artist's identity, pieces are assigned a catalogue number and sold purely on their aesthetic merit.

Dep[art]ment are now permanently exhibiting their pieces at:

Al Duomo, 7 Pavillion Buildings, Brighton, BN1 1EE.

Al Duomo is a great restaurant with friendly, accomodating staff, frequently running interesting food and drink promotions such as 2 for1 on cocktails & 2 for1 on main meals, join their facebook group to keep in touch with their offers..

As well as the restaurant, they've got a club in the basement where NoTalent? have some nights lined-up so we'll be sure to see you there.
